Pintxos are similar to tapas, although generally smaller. The name “pincho” comes from the Spanish verb “pinchar” (to poke) because historically pintxos used to be served on a piece of bread and crossed (“pinchados”) with a toothpick.

However, with the evolution of Basque gastronomy, pintxos are increasingly varied and currently only some of them are served with a toothpick.

It’s an amazing food to share with friends and taste small portions of different Spanish cuisine at a really cheap price.

Would you like to try? You can join us next time or go straight to Calle Blai in Barcelona, where you can find many bars that serve the pinchos!

Tapas afternoons are a classic in Spain and Salamanca is one of the best cities to have them. That’s why last week we went to several bars with the students to enjoy an afternoon de tapas on Van Dyck Street, a very popular area.

We went to different bars and in each one, we had delicious tapas for all tastes: meat, fish, cheese, and vegetables.

Besides going for tapas, the students took advantage of the fact that on Wednesdays there are discounts at the cinema and they went to see “While the war lasts,” a film by director Alejandro Amenábar. This film is shot almost entirely in Salamanca and talks about the awareness of the writer Miguel de Unamuno about the Spanish Civil War.

The students said the movie and tapas afternoon was perfect so we will repeat it very soon. Do you want to come and enjoy an afternoon of movies and tapas? What are you waiting for? Sign up for our Spanish courses and come and share unforgettable experiences with us!

It was time to check out a different barrio in Barcelona. So we took the metro to El Clot. It is one of the oldest parts of the district that has been around since medieval times. The first bar we went to was Bodega Sopena, where we tried Vermut and the friendly bartender prepared plates with cheese, ham, chorizo, lomo, and fuet. After this, we went to another bar where they had paella pans for chairs and toilet rolls on the table to clean your hands. Something different for sure.

El Clot, we are definitely coming back!

Spain is synonymous with tapas, small portions of free food that are served with your drink. Granada is one of the Spanish cities where bars serve the largest and most delicious tapas in the whole country.

But where does the name “tapas” come from? The first record of tapas dates back to 1903. The word has its origin in the top that was once placed on the jugs and glasses so that the air didn’t spoil the wine. Over time, these tops were transformed and became portions of food.

Since then and until today, in Granada we like to meet with friends and go for tapas, which has become one of the cultural features best known to foreigners who visit us.

Therefore, at Linguaschools Granada we organize tapas tours so that our students get to know typical bars of the city, try some tapas and make new friends.

What is the difference between tapas and pinchos (pintxos)?

Along the years, tapas and pinchos have become a form of national identification.

Indeed, nowadays, when you hear tapas or pinchos, you automatically imagine yourself at a terrace in Spain, sipping a nice Sangria or Tinto de Verano, while eating a mini snack.

Tapas

Pinchos or Pintxos

Definition
The Spanish dictionarry (REA) defines a tapa as ‘a small portion of any food served to accompany a drink’.
Definition
The Spanish dictionary defines a pincho like ‘a portion of food served, sometimes with a cocktail stick, as an aperitif’. The word “pincho” comes from the verb “to pinchar” which means “to pierce”.
A tapa is normally just a smaller sized portion of a main dish, served in a plate, which you eat with cutlery. The pincho is normally served on a piece of bread or other, served usually with a cocktail stick which you can eat in one or two bites.
From which region do tapas come from?
It’s hard to define the exact origin. Some say tapas are originally from the center of Spain. Tapas-style food is popular from classical to very modern interpretations. You find many different varieties all over Spain.
From which region do pinchos (or pintxos) come from?
The pincho are traditionally from the Basque country, an autonomous region in the north of Spain. In Bask language a pincho is written as “pintxo”.  Although in numbers you will still find most pintxos bars in the Bask county Nowadays, pintxo are a popular all over Spain.

Eating tapas in Andalucia
Tapas are generally presented in a menu-style and you pay for every tapa. However in some cities in the southern region of Andalucia, such as Almería or Granada, there is a tapas culture where tapas are served for free with every drink you order.
Be careful: with every new drink, the tapa tends to get a bit better and more elaborate than the previous. So you end up ordering more drinks!

You want to try the best tapas in Granada and don’t know where to go? If you’re a student at our Granada school, we’ll take you on a tour to the best ones.

Tapas or pintxos in Barcelona and Madrid
Both Barcelona and Madrid are melting pots of immigrants from all other regions in Spain, you will find many different type of tapas bars; specialized in fish, meat, classical tapas, modern cuisine tapas or pintxos (see next paragraph). This is where the area between tapas and pinchos will get grey.

You want to order your own pintxos in Spanish San Sebastián? If you’re a student at our school in San Sebastián, we’ll take you on a tour to the best pintxos bars! Okay, fair enough, at all our schools in Spain we take our students out for tapas to the nicest and most original local tapas bars.
